Wine Down Wednesday features the 2018 Maritana Pinot Noir “Le Russe”

Discover It.

He’s done it again, Maritana Pinot Noir, brilliant. A lot of us are quite familiar with the awesome Chardonnays and Pinot Noirs from the brilliant team of Donald Patz and James Hall. Starting in the late 1970s, Patz & Hall vinified some of America’s most flavorful and distinctive examples of these two Burgundian varietals. A few years ago, Donald Patz ventured out on his own, continuing his viticultural passion with the creation of Maritana, https://maritanavineyards.com/

Donald’s love, passion and personal excitement has always centered around the grapes of Burgundy, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. Thus Maritana only works with these 2 varietals. Having been in the wine biz for over 30 years, Patz has worked closely with the top vineyard sites in California and and he brings these relationships to Maritana.

The 2018 Maritana Pinot Noir Le Russe is a continuation of Donald’s mastery with this finicky varietal. Sourced from the Russian River Valley, it is a combination of fruit from the “who’s who” of growers and sites in California – Dutton Road, Jenkins Ranch, Martaella Vineyard, Moonshine Ranch. Wow those are some cool, hip sites with some really great dirt.

Taste It.

This delicious Pinot is quite fragrant exuding remarkably interesting fresh raspberry, cherry cola notes. On the palate, it possesses the subtleties and qualities that we all enjoy from top examples of this grape, elegance and sensuality. Remarkable changes as it sits in the glass, if you can let it sit.

Pair It.

Enjoy a simple grilled pork chop with this summery salad to bring out the true character of the wine. https://www.lacucinaitaliana.com/recipe/sides-and-vegetables/figs-salad
